Author's notes: My first fanfic ever. Wow it seems like a long time ago! Disclaimer: Mulder, Scully, and pretty much everything below don't belong to me. Wish they did. :) XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX There were many words Dana Scully could think of to describe Fox Mulder, but skeptical had never been one of them. That is until now... The look on his face said it all. 'How is it that I can be so lucky?' He was mesmerized by the scene in front of him. Scully sat in the rocking chair that Skinner had given them as a baby shower/going away present. Mulder knelt in front of her, staring in awe at the baby, safely tucked between her and the soft blanket. William continued to sleep peacefully, oblivious to his audience for the moment. "I know Mulder." Scully said softly, reading his thoughts, "I can hardly believe it myself." "We've seen some pretty amazing things Scully," Mulder said kneeling down to get a closer look at the miracle in his partner's arms. "But I think this one takes the cake." Scully smiled, gently tucking the soft cotton around her son's sleeping face. "We couldn't have done it without you Mulder." "Well if I'm not mistaken, you played a pretty big part yourself mom." Mulder smiled ruefully and Scully rolled her eyes, unable to hide her amusement. ~*~*~ Will stirred at the sound of his parents' voices, and Mulder reached out his finger for the little hand. With his eyes still closed, the baby took the offered finger and quickly thrust it into his mouth. Within minutes he was asleep again, Mulder's large finger still safely trapped between his tiny ones. Somewhere in the back of his mind, Mulder took a mental picture. He never wanted to forget this moment for the rest of his life. ~*~*~ As Scully watched her son and his father, she couldn't keep her eyes from watering. After all those long months of fearing the worst, and going through his horrible death, her prayers had finally been answered. He was here and he wasn't going anywhere. ~*~*~ Suddenly Mulder felt Scully's hand on his face and looked up, noticing for the first time that she was crying. It took him only a few seconds to realize that he was too. Don't cry Scully. I can't help it. Mulder smiled. Me neither. They didn't need speech for communication. Smiling, Scully caught one of his tears with her thumb and Mulder leaned forward, careful not to wake William as he touched his lips to her face, tasting the salt of her tears. "I love you Scully," he whispered, gently tucking a strand of stray hair behind her ear. Without hesitation Scully answered, "I love you too Mulder." ~*~*~ They were such simple words, funny how they'd never been said back and forth before. Scully loved Mulder, and Mulder loved Scully, yet it seemed to be an unspoken rule between them that the actual words didn't need to be said out loud. Mulder met her eyes and smiled, squeezing Scully's hand. She smiled back. With William nestled between them, they'd both come to a silent consensus that that rule needed to be broken. From the look in Mulder's eye, Scully decided that it had been broken for good. And she was as happy about it as he was. As if sensing the change in his parents, William cooed, and both Mulder and Scully laughed. ~*~*~ Mulder caught Scully's eye, remembering their first meeting. How much he had enjoyed being "Rob and Laura Petrie". Scully's abduction, how helpless and scared he was when she was suffering from her cancer, and how happy he was when she was *really* 'fine'. ~*~*~ Reading Mulder's thoughts, Scully remembered the baseball, the "Walking in Memphis", and how he had kept her warm the night before he left for Oregon. She thought about how a part of her had died when he was gone, and how happy she was now that he was back. The sound of Mulder's voice brought Scully back to the present. She laughed when she realized what he was saying. ~*~*~ "Well one thing's for sure Will. Once you get old enough, your mommy and I will have some great bedtime stories!" Mulder winked at Scully, adding, " You'll be the envy of all the kids on the block!" "Oh I don't know about that," Scully said with a laugh. "Are we sure we want him to know some of these places these hands have been? Mulder laughed. "Very true." He thought a second then added, "You don't tell him about the bile, I promise I won't tell him about some of your autopsies." "Deal." They were both grinning and William cooed again. Mulder sighed, feeling a heavy weight lift off his shoulders. After all these years of chasing aliens and conspiracies, through Moth Men and Flukeman, and more strange things than he could count, Mulder was finally at peace. Who would have thought? Scully squeezed his hand and Mulder smiled, knowing that he had found the truth...and it was absolutely perfect.
